Winter Preparations

Winter is a time for inspiration and creation when I search for burls and wood which are colourful, dramatic and highly figured. They are the raw materials which I turn into live edge tables, bowls and platters. The workshop is full of the noise and vibration of the lathe and sander and the accumulation of dust and wood chips. I am busy preparing work for commissions and the 2022 studio tour.

The Artists of the Limberlost Studio Tour  is August 19, 20 & 21 from 10 am to 5 pm. As one of the founding members, we are celebrating our 15th year of opening our studios, sharing our art and letting you know the process behind its creation. You are invited to visit 8 studios and see 22 artists who have developed creativity and traditions from the natural beauty of Limberlost Road.

Burl art with its warmth, inherent flaws and imperfections connect you to nature and the innate beauty of wood. I hope to see you at the studio tour in 2022.

A turned bowl begins at the lathe. Big Leaf Maple Burl has unique figuring, colour and bark inclusions that are revealed as I turn off the outer bark.

The first coat of oil reveals the depth and drama of the Big Leaf Maple Burl Platter.

This Big Leaf Maple Burl Platter has a natural bark edge, rich variations in colour and a lustrous food-safe finish.

The imperfections of bark inclusions in this Yellow Birch Burl Bowl add rustic interest and creative energy to a live edge work of art.

Form and function are evident in a highly figured Black Walnut Bowl. Perfect for display or to serve your favourite salad.

Each Maple Burl is a mystery until it is turned on the lathe. The curved markings, live bark edge and swirling grain make it a beautiful and unique addition to your home.

Karen and I look forward to welcoming you to our workshop this year at the Artists of the Limberlost Studio Tour on August 19, 20 and 21, 2022. Last year we had a successful Art Show at Hillside Farm and it was a wonderful collaboration with the other artists.
